Origin and history
Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the region surrounding the city of Tequila in the western state of Jalisco, Mexico. The history of tequila dates back to the Aztecs, who fermented agave sap to produce a drink called pulque. After the Spanish arrived in Mexico in the 16th century, they began distilling agave to create what is now known as tequila. The first commercial tequila distillery was established in the late 18th century, and the spirit has since become a symbol of Mexican culture and heritage. Today, tequila is enjoyed worldwide and is often consumed neat, in cocktails like the margarita, or as a shot with salt and lime.
